Wednesday Night Ski: Jan 30, 2008
NOTICE - CHANGE OF VENUE DUE TO CONDITIONS - MEET AT SNOWFLAKE
The Duluth XC Ski Club Wednesday Night Ski Race and Tour series is at Lester Park this week.
This week will be a mass start at the parking lot on Seven Bridges Road.
Some people come to race against friends; some people come to race against their own best times. Some people come just for the fun. Whatever your reason, come on out and enjoy the GREAT snow and good company.
Venue
Lester Park. Snowflake.
Conditions
COLD! Please dress for conditions. We’re hoping for a couple inches to freshen up the course, but whether it comes or not, temps will be arctic.
Distance
4.1 kilometers
Format
Mass start, classic or skate.
Registration
Between 6:00pm and 6:20pm, at the start line.
Start Time
6:30pm sharp.
Course
The lit loop.
We will start at the Seven Bridges Rd parking area, go downhill, take the sharp left U-turn back uphill, and ski. Skip the B turn, the C turn and the D turn. When you arrive at F, turn left, take the dipsy-doodle hill, then turn left again at the top of that hill to head back to the parking lot. No other side loops.
As you go straight at C (just past the overlook), it seems like you are skiing into the dark, but the lights are there, below the horizon line. As you continue, you will see the lights again.
Pairs of cones will show where not to turn.
Cost
Race fee - free for DXC members, $5 for everyone else. You must have a Great Minnesota Ski Pass to ski at Lester Park.
How long will it take?
Super-fast elite skiers will be done in 10 to 15 minutes. Fast and fit skiers will be done in 15-20 minutes. Mere mortals will be done in 20-30 minutes. Rank beginners will be done in 30-40 minutes. Small children and bog lemmings may take longer than 45 minutes.
Points?
Points are automatically assigned based on order of finish. Men and Women earn points separately. 1st male/female across the line earns 5 points. 2nd person earns 4.9 points, etc. At the end of the season, the person with the most points wins the DXC cup. As you can see, being fast is helpful, but showing up consistently can be an ace in the hole. If you are Ski Touring, you should still sign up - our sponsors love to know how popular DXC is! All Ski Tourers will earn .1 point less than the last racer.
Other Notes
With the wacky weather predicted this week, be prepared for lightning-fast ice or styrofoam or…? Just dress warm.
WANTED
One or two timing assistants. No experience necessary - about a one-hour commitment (from 6pm to 7pm). If you can help, please drop a line to info@duluthxc.com.
See you there!
