Classic or Skate?
I love both skate & classic skiing, but “just right” classic conditions ROCK! Skiing the rivers is real cool!
Your ‘home’ trail:
Magney-Snively
Best trail system
I love to ski at Brule early in the morning or late at night. It is where I first started (first snow). I also like ABR in Michigan , Jay Cooke, Korkki and North End (at night).
Favorite race?
My first “race” was the Ridgenator at Giant’s Ridge last year (a duathlon of skiing classic and skating). I loved it! I had just learned to ski on waxable classics the week before and it was cold! I really had fun at the Korteloppet. What an event…some go to Hawaii in February, my family goes to Hayward (will the kids ever forgive us?) I did not have fun at the Pre-Birkie (can you say bonk and licking frozen Gatorade out or your water bottle and…)
How do you train in off-season?
Train? Oh, yeah, train…I like to keep signing up for “events” to help me with keeping a goal. I am coming into this activity for enjoyment and fitness. I want to do my personal best for my fitness level and keep improving, but I try to keep it in perspective for who I am.
What do you do when you aren’t skiing?
Fly fishing, kayaking, being outside, there is so much more,…and, of course, kissing my wife.
Advice to someone new to XC skiing:
XC skiing was intimidating to me at first. It can be as complex or as simple as you’d like it to be. It does help to get lessons. There are a lot of places to get started. Even just an hour lesson for casual skiing. Also, buy good performance clothes. Even if you just plan on “duffing” through the woods looking at chickadees. Blue jeans won’t cut it. You will only be miserable. Finally, either go out alone or find someone, but just go out and do it!!
