Summers in Duluth really can’t be beat, especially if you’re a nordic skier. Parks in every neighborhood serve as our training grounds; hills for bounding, lakes for ski walking, trails for running and smooth roads for rollerskiing. As I caught up with DXC’s youth training program tonight, I discovered this group has been turning heads all around town.
New this season, rollerski nights are in town rather than out on Highway 61. As I snapped some photos of one group doing specific strength (hill repeats) in one of the neighborhoods off the new section of Lakewalk, I had a chance to speak to some of the neighbors. Taking a break from their lawn-mowing and garage sale preparations, they sauntered over to me curious to learn more about these wheeled athletes who they’ve been seeing this summer. Their first question was “Who are these people?”
It was very clear to the neighbors how hard these kids were working, and they each expressed great admiration. The onlookers told me they were very happy to have this youth group training in their neighborhood stating it was “truly inspiring.”
Keep it up skiers!
